Non need-based aid? That sounds more like an athletic scholarship or a need-based scholarship/grant.

My DS applied to College of Arts and Sciences (intended major is math) back in August, was accepted in September, and got an offer of ($10k per year) in October I think? He is white, MCPS, no hooks. Pitt is definitely in the mix. With the aid, it would be the most affordable option for us after UMD and UMBC, his 2 in-state applications. Still waiting to hear from the Pitt Honors College.

My DS was accepted at the end of October (and has one other admit with a big merit award), but hasn't received any notice of merit yet. But, reading this thread, I'm just grateful that he got in, since I hadn't heard that admissions were double.

My niece who’s from out of state (Connecticut) told me that Pitt’s one of the top most expensive public higher education school in the country. I did hear that the merit aid’s getting more stingy this year.

Perhaps Pitt’s ranking last year made them highly competitive in their merit aid offerings.

SCI’s undergraduate computer science program ranked No. 54 in the 2022-2023 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings, six spots higher than last year.

Pitt ranked highly in several other categories, including undergraduate nursing (No. 15), undergraduate business (No. 34)

White male, no hooks. He is a 2-sport varsity athlete (with club sport commitments) and has had full-time summer jobs. He has gotten 4 5s and 2 4s on AP exams, so Scholar with Distinction. Nothing very spiky at all, but an involved, well-rounded kid. Not sure if that had an impact or not.

Owed? No. Wanting an answer? Yes. Some kids aren’t going if there’s no merit. It’s an odd uncertainty of not knowing if there will be any or not. For some people, this also impacts their RD application choices.

For oos folks with kids getting into engineering, would you pls post stats as well as merit $$? Thanks and congrats!

Why shouldn't they ask? Everyone is hoping for the best financial aid possible, and that lies mostly with merit. Hoping/asking is not the equivalent of "being owed." Merit is an important part of the equation when it comes to deciding and applying.

OP here. No, not feeling entitled to a scholarship. We just looked at results from years past and that seemed to indicate a higher level of merit aid than people seem to be getting this year.
