The values of Leonidas, whose people had practised a peculiarly murderous form of eugenics, and trained their young to kill uppity Untermenschen by night, were nothing that I recognised as my own; nor were those of Caesar, who was reported to have killed a million Gauls and enslaved a million more. It was not just the extremes of callousness that I came to find shocking, but the lack of a sense that the poor or the weak might have any intrinsic value. As such, the founding conviction of the Enlightenment – that it owed nothing to the faith into which most of its greatest figures had been born – increasingly came to seem to me unsustainable....
Familiarity with the biblical narrative of the Crucifixion has dulled our sense of just how completely novel a deity Christ was. In the ancient world, it was the role of gods who laid claim to ruling the universe to uphold its order by inflicting punishment – not to suffer it themselves.
Today, even as belief in God fades across the West, the countries that were once collectively known as Christendom continue to bear the stamp of the two-millennia-old revolution that Christianity represents. It is the principal reason why, by and large, most of us who live in post-Christian societies still take for granted that it is nobler to suffer than to inflict suffering. It is why we generally assume that every human life is of equal value. In my morals and ethics, I have learned to accept that I am not Greek or Roman at all, but thoroughly and proudly Christian.
When I speak to atheists who say that morals such as helping the weak are “obvious,” I know they’re wrong about this. If they were so obvious to everyone, Western civilization would not be as unique in history as it is. They are obvious to us because we’re a product of our culture, and our culture is a product of Christianity, and Christianity is the worship of Jesus.

I used to think most people were good. Recently life has shown me something else. I seem to be surrounded by not as good/honest people. If this is testing me it's next level insanity.
Np. I find this interesting. Why would you ever think most people are good? People are inherently self centered which leads to all kinds of bad behavior. It is only through religion that people have any moral code at all.
NP, and yikes. Morality is intrinsic for most people. If your morals would disappear without religion to rein it in, there’s something wrong with you.
Oh dear. You’re one of those parents. “My child can do no wrong because he just IS. He was born perfect!”
Lol…what? No, what I’m saying is that if you don’t have an internal moral compass, and you need religion to know right from wrong…you might be a psychopath.
lol right back. Where do you believe that one gets this “internal” moral compass from? Judging by most 4 years olds, it doesn’t exist.
Do you not have an innate sense of right and wrong?
Sure, as a socialized adult I do. But only because I was taught right from wrong by my parents, school, community, etc. Many do not. If you believe it’s an “innate sense” that people are born with, you’re an utter fool.
I feel sorry for you that you apparently need religion to tell you right from wrong. Most people know the difference in their hearts. I wonder what your life must be like.
“Most people know the difference in their hearts” is one of the singularly stupidest statements I have ever read on DCUM, and that is saying something.
I am dumbfounded that a person could reach adulthood with this point of view.
+1 this is a ridiculous statement, pp cannot be an adult. If they are, they are either unserious or a liar.
What do you mean?
If you are referring to the idea of "knowing" something "in your heart", which is impossible, I completely agree, but I assume the person was being metaphorical with reference to the heart, which only pumps blood.
If you are referring to the idea that you can't have morality without religion, well, that is demonstrably untrue, unless you take a fully presuppositional position.

+1million. And maybe without people living for an "afterlife" or some other religious dogma, we would have evolved to care more about each other and our survival as a species. Either way....religion is definitely the root of a lot of evil. sometimes it is subtle and insidious in the ways it changes people and their behavior here in the one life we KNOW we have.

No one have it. It is tought (sometimes by example, sometimes as part of early childhood education). Why do you think young children (as old as 5 yo) saying that all that they want to do is to kill Jews when they grow up? Where is their innate compass of right and wrong?
