Allen: "Time for a budget thread. MPD will start Fiscal Year 2021 on October 1 with a budget that’s $33 million *less* than they have today. It’s been reported as an increase, so let’s dig into the details, with some thoughts on how the Judiciary Committee got to our proposal...So how will this all play out? In essence, unless money is transferred in by the Mayor, they’ll be in an effective hiring freeze for new officers. Add attrition into the mix & force numbers will start to drop by about 200 officers (we’re at 3,700-3,800 right now)...Our strategy is to reduce our force size in a responsible way by turning off the spigot plus adding in natural attrition. It starts immediate action & lets the community continue this conversation and reinvest those funds elsewhere where needed...The District needs to be committed to a sustained effort of funding, and defunding, that aligns with our priorities and puts our public dollars where they can do the most good."

In the whole Allen thread, he goes into explicit detail about how the Council defunded the MPD in the budget.

I love how the people who actually pay attention to what the Council is doing are called liars, while the people who pay no attention keep claiming the Council wasn't for defunding the police (or know they were, and are purposefully lying to misinform the public). This isn't even hidden stuff you have to look into, this is what Councilmembers were explicitly and publicly saying just three years back.

This is not a photoshopped image; it is a D.C. public street:

It is the Council’s “Criminal Caucus” that should be defunded. These quotes are smoking guns that Nadeau and Allen bear some of the responsibility for DC’s crime wave. Time to “defund” them by defeating them for reelection.

Smoking guns indeed.

These measures all seem destined to land more Black children in prison.

We all know these kids grew up in under-resourced communities, and were never given the opportunities they deserved growing up. Prison is not going to make their lives better.

And letting them off without any sort of punishment or rehabilitation -- which is exactly what's happening now -- is not going to make anyone else's lives better.

+1

What about the other black children in these neighborhoods deserving to grow up in a safe community? I live in a majority black neighborhood and everyone is concerned about crime and safety.

+2 when I see comments on IG and Twitter on various DC crime stories the people most concerned about crime, especially violent crime, are black and they are really fearing for their safety.

Yes, for many of us in this city, this isn’t a philosophical debate. The current crime policies are life and death.

They should donate their hefty salaries to the "violence interruptor program" that they so believe in - clearly we need more.

Chief Smith talked about the hiring freeze and Naudea had to STFU and sit there looking stupider than she normally does. Then she lashed out like a kindergarten teacher “I’m talking.”

Did I read that correctly on Twitter that she left the hearing after only 10 minutes, barely 12 hours after she said she needed to hear from more voices before deciding whether she was going to vote for the bill?

I don’t live in her Ward, but watched her hearing last night get a sense of Chief Smith.

It was good to hear the anger from Ward 1 residents, even with Nadeau’s tin ears (and air of being above them).

I am no fan of No Do but in fairness she had said at the top she would be in and out, she had other meetings and I believe another hearing to chair. Frumin was also in and out. Bonds stayed for the part I saw and engaged.

Bonds is an old fashioned pol. She actually shows up and listens to her constituents. A number of the council members think they know better and that there is little need to hear from residents, particularly those who challenge the CM’s preconceived views.

Frumin at least put the issue in the right context when he said that the future of the city depends on getting crime under control. He was extremely slow to recognize the problem and the frustration of Ward 3 residents, but I think he gets it now.
