The counties surrounding DC are known for having very high incomes. The top 10 counties for median HHI in the USA include Loudoun, Fairfax, Arlington, and Howard. And we know certain sections of DC are very high HHI. So if local people are posting here, it makes sense that they have higher than normal HHI.

Sorry for the confusion. To clarify, I meant the people who I actually know - from kids' schools, neighbors, friends, etc. We're more likely to be on DCUM. Of course lots of people make far less.

I think the PP that you are talking about was giving a few examples of workers that make less than 300K, which is why they put "etc" at the end of their comment.

there is a lot of self-selection. Many people who either don’t have a high salary or many assets/investments are not going to post. For that reason I’ve really enjoyed the “Am I the only one who thinks about money all the time” thread. Some seemingly more realistic posts there. It’s sort of like test optional schools. Only the students with high scores will report which skews overall test scores higher.

I think you can tell it’s mostly lies by how fixated posters are on HHI as a metric. Depending on the moment in your life and how much you’re worth, that number is going to bounce a lot and matter not so much.

Like if you’re 25 and you make $10k less than the guy in the next cubicle but you can tap a family trust for an AFR loan and you have no student loans, HHI is not a sufficient metric.

Similarly if you’re 40 and making $300k but the family next door making $300k has grandparents and/or trusts paying all kid tuition costs and they own their house without a mortgage, that’s not captured in HHI. It’s these sort of sideways things that I think make people feel like they’re not “keeping up” or whatever anyway.

I’m a big law partner. Between other lawyers in private that I know, lots of lobbyists and in house counsel, SVPs and C suite types. . . most people in my DC world make “good money.” Many discussions on here about money ring true, although there’s definitely some trolling going on.
