Two friends with kids at Bard. Both love it. Very talented smart kids. Self selects kids go there.

I'd take SCAD recommendations with a grain of salt. Be sure to do your research on how the school is run and what the outcomes are for graduates.
I second Kalamazoo College and Juniata College. I've visited both and met those artsy kids. The schools have high acceptance rates and give a LOT of merit if your kid has good grades.
Kalamazoo College is walkable to downtown with a small art museum, coffee shops, etc. Juniata College is in a very small town in an extremely rural area BUT they have an excellent small museum on campus and the woman running it is smart and implementing good programs. They have a pretty big ceramics studio too. I think Juniata received a gift of some Calders, IIRC.
Skidmore seems druggy, horsy rich kid to me. My kid declared the college felt like a boarding high school. The tour guide there told us she "wouldn't know what to do" at a big school, and I thought "the world is big." On College Confidential, I learned from Skidmore parents about the "druggie dorm." Since it's so small, I wonder if that would be easy to avoid if you didn't want to do drugs. On the plus side, they have a professional music hall with excellent sound. They have one main place to eat on campus and the town was gorgeous but very small with large gold horses on the lawns of those who own race horses...I know kids who attend and love it though!

West Virginia, East Carolina, and Ohio University all have good arts programs and are not too selective.
