These terms are being weaponized, cruelly, against Jews who were the subjects of ethnic cleansing and genocide - the systematic eradication of 5 million of them in WWII and prior (ethnic cleansing and systematic killing of Jews goes way back, unfortunately). I’m grateful that people are being called out for this.

That does not preclude Israel from committing a genocide. Many people view what is happening in Gaza as genocide and ethnic cleansing, meeting the definitions of both.

I truly have mixed feelings about people who believe they are engaged in political speech getting fired or other big consequences. But OTOH I am glad that casual antisemitism is being stood up to. There’s a difference between what Sarandon said and a naive college student going to a march and chanting along to “From the river to the sea.”

At the end of the day, I do believe if you’re going to take a stand publicly on the side of a nation or ethnicity, you bear the responsibility for what happens when you piss off “the other side” through uniformed or deliberately offensive speech.
