People, these interviews do not matter.

I'm confused. Is getting an interview a bad sign? What additional information could be needed? Given that so much information is provided in the common app, numerous supplemental questions, rec letters, transcript, etc. what more will a 30-45 minute interview with an alum add to a student's file? Is Yale trying to figure out if the kid is obnoxious? Weird? Is the interview a courtesy prior to a deferral or rejection? What am I failing to understand here?

How do you know?

Because I interview for Yale. Yesterday was told assignments would start being made (at least for my area) and today I got assigned a student to invite for an interview

We were just notified today about interview with Yale. We thought it was too late. We were actually hoping for no interview as that would essentially guarantee no deferral. I feel like no interview means auto admit or auto reject but interview is in the middle and can go any of the three ways.

You “feel” this??? Any other baseless mystical sensations you’d like to share because that one is wild. You’ve unlocked the admissions protocols for an Ivy. That’s amazing.

Actually the Yale AO basically says as much. They mostly interview people who are on the "bubble". Locks for admission do not need an interview to help application and clearly unqualified would be a waste.

But I am sure that you were really just looking for a cute little comment. Cheers

DP: However, is that true for all the REA's or just Yale? I don't think we can generalize for all the others.

Their statement is a bit more vague than this-- not those that are 'on the bubble' but kids for whom they need more info. These could be the same thing, but not necessarily. (The AOs could believe they really understand the kid's qualifications-- just find the kid borderline. Vs. there is something more ambiguous in their application.). Hard to say.

Yes, lots of possibilities.

Still nothing from Yale either. DC and couple of classmates who are also applying have not heard anything.

So it does not mean much either way if you are contacted for an interview for Princeton?

Who knows! It may mean you were so strong they did not need to confirm/verify/add anything. Or automatically below their threshold. If you are a hyper-strong applicant, or the opposite, you may know if either of these apply to you.

Of course, now that we are approaching TKG week, there may not be enough interviewers to go around.

Nope. DS is waiting. At this point I have to believe it will not happen. Maybe a good sign?

My understanding is that Yale has stated that because the number of interview slots is limited, they are reserving interviews for those that they need more information on. I think in REA at Yale no interview is either firmly accepted or a quick no, so you can look at it as a positive or a negative. We are hoping to avoid deferral so that ED2 remains an option. No interview request for daughter and we are assuming it wont happen at this point.

Does deferral not free you to do whatever you want (as far as ED2 is concerned)?

Yes it does free the child to apply ED2 elsewhere but ED2 is binding and it would be difficult decision to apply ED2 binding at a school less desired than the REA school if deferred. Our thought was to apply to a school outside of the top 25 ED2(to give a better chance of getting in to a good school) if denied. Daughter just got notified today of interview so we assume she has atleast made it past the first review but is not likely to get in REA.

Is your DD in NoVA? Still waiting for a Yale EA interview invite for my DC

NP. NOVA waiting as well.
