My gay son finds people like your friends, with their “rights for me but not for thee” view of queer identity to be maddening.

Sexuality is emphatically not a private matter when 29% of trans youth have attempted suicide due to bullying.

Here’s an idea — instead of trying to silence the people pointing out oppression, maybe work on stopping the oppression?

My gay friends (in their 50’s) find the current leftist gender identity stuff maddening. They are both rather conservative, upper class, and find discussing sexual preference at work or in public to be distasteful.

If any of this resonates with OP, I’d look at one of the more traditional boys schools. Sexuality is a private matter. -I’m leaving the thread now!

I'm OP, and this is largely what I'm talking about. I have no issue with a school being center-left, but progressives have gone way off the rails in the last few years when it comes to cultural issues.

I don't want my child becoming an aggrieved victim or left-wing "activist." However, I also know that there are unfortunately some schools that aren't not accepting of gay kids.

I still want my son to believe in the values of hard work, individualism, perseverance, and traditional values. You won't be able to instill those values at the "Victim Academies" that exist in DC.


Awesome. So when your son is discriminated against, bullied, or harmed in some way, you are going to tell him it is not real and he should just bootstrap himself out of feeling upset about it, right? Please report back in a few years and let us know how that all worked out.

Fwiw, my child attends what you would likely consider one of "Victim Academies" and those values you named are ones that my child is being taught and modeled at this "Victim Academy" with the exception of extreme individualism, because that is actually anathema to the values of the religion (protestant Christian) that the school is affiliated with. I also find it comical that so many Christian conservatives are so hardcore into individualism as a value, given that individualism means very specifically to put yourself first above all else, is pretty anti community, anti charity, and actually technically anti family, but, that tracks for typical GOP/evangelical hypocrisy.

Bingo. This must be who OP has raised her child to be. If that's who he is now, she's not wrong to look for a school that will support who he is. The thing OP does not understand because she is not gay and likely white, and thus unlikely to have personal experience with that sort of discrimination, is that a really big part of the wokeness she's trying to avoid is exactly why her gay child will be supported by the school and its community. If she picks a school that leans conservative, what does she think will happen when her child is being subjected to bigoted bullying? Which will happen. Any school nowadays that is not overtly committed to inclusion is not going to take care of OP's son if things get bad. And things are far more likely to get bad at a place that is a haven for those who are anti-woke.

As a liberal Democrat, I would like to be offended, but can’t really get there. Your last paragraph describes so many of my kids’ friends (gay, straight, and other) so perfectly.

nonsense. The Heights is one of the most non-woke, conservative schools you will find. Plus, it is very Catholic. it is a fantastic school in many respects, but if I had a gay son, I would choose from one of the many other fine schools in the DMV.
