Ok but why do some sports get them but not others? I’m sorry but it’s a joke for girls to have freshman field hockey while it’s can’t have freshman soccer. Girls can literally decide to try the sport for the first time in 9th grade and make the team. While boys who have played high level soccer for years have to try out for JV and hope they can somehow stand out among 100+ boys most of whom are older and bigger.
And I agree about football. Girls end up having so many more options for teams to join because the total number of participants has to be equal to boys. Football eats up a huge percentage of spots on the boys side. There is nothing equivalent on the girls side. Title IX should be total number of teams, not number of athletes.

High Schools are mindful of facility upgrades they are making to ensure men’s and women’s teams are treated similarly, but there is no law or rule that mandates they have the same number of participants.
The biggest issue is field space in the spring which is when the VHSL plays soccer. There are already 4 soccer teams, 4 lacrosse teams and a men’s and women’s track team that utilize the rectangular stadium fields. Adding two more freshman teams would make it difficult for some schools to find game and practice time. Also is difficult to find coaches who want to do freshman sports. Football, field hockey, and volleyball all struggle to find capable and professional individuals to coach and supervise these students, which will ultimately lead to their demise. It is more likely there are no freshman sports in the future than it being expanded sadly.
You are incorrect. Title IX absolutely applies to high school sports. They are obligated to provide equal opportunities to boys and girls. The problem is there is often not an equal demand. Which results in fewer spots for boys relative to the number who would like to participate.

Anonymous wrote:I am curious too- we have freshman field hockey, volleyball, football, basketball- but no soccer. seems odd.
Anonymous wrote:Could be because men’s soccer is easily the worst behaved sporting event that FCPS currently hosts. Players, coaches, and parents have caused tons of issues at numerous schools.

Do other sports have freshman teams or just football?
