interesting
the school has tons of rigor and the students there are all very impressive who i have met
i love the academic versatility of the class it relieves the stress of competing among an entire class with the same academics for a race to the top or bottom
great course selections including honors and they have AP for those who want it
the haters gonna hate but whatever
in hind sight going through college admission i probably should have sent them back to public bc i don’t think the students get grace for taking rigorous classes that are not graded on a curve so admissions process for college has been an eye opener when competing against public kids w GPAs 4+

I know of kids who did not get in at ninth grade. Don’t know about earlier.

This comment says far more about you than about Flint Hill.

5th is an expansion year and I think 7th is too (we’re in 6th now so I’m not 100% sure in that). 5th is less common as an entry year in general because 4th isn’t usually an “exit year” for public or other privates, so there might be less competition than in 7th, but both years are probably about equal in terms of your chances. It’s not a gimme, but it’s not a super competitive school to get into. If you actually want to start in 5th, apply, but if you really want 7th and are just worried about your chances, as long as your kid is a solid student you’re probably ok.

How do they determine if a fourth grader is a solid student? My public school doesn't even give grades for K-5.

Pathetic.

The parents who think that any private school outside of the “Big 3” is unacceptable are the classic Type A DC strivers who think that any law school outside of New Haven or Cambridge is unacceptable. Flint Hill is a fine school and as was stated earlier, the ultimate outcome will depend so much more on the individual student than the school.

Our admissions experience was smooth. But even if it wasn't, the admissions department isn't really involved in the day-to-day education.

why?

There is a small group of vocal trolls who alwayd post unsupported negative comments about FH. They are angry that it is not a pressure cooker like the “top”’ schools but still gets great college placement results.

That is not true. I posted the comment as I had a DD who attended the school last year. It is a terrible school and a toxic environment. Teachers are subpar.

What made it toxic? My son’s experience there has been fantastic, and he came from a “good” public school that had a lot of bullying and indifferent teachers. None of that here. He has thrived.

Of course there is a difference in college placement for the avg FH student and the average Potomac student. But that says more about the students than the school. And that difference is pretty small. Much smaller than the difference in outcomes between the average FH student and the average VA public high school student.
