My kid wants to go because it’s a “play hard-work hard” school. It has a strong reputation, excellent programs. Too pricey OOS for us, though.

UVA used to be discussed by my MD friends as an option for their kids, but over the past few years has seemed to turn into an obsession to get their kids in. Maybe it is a competition amount their peers? Maybe UMD is seen as second rate/they want to be out of state? Something seems to have changed in the past few years.

And then on this forum there is an obsession over it. I get it is a good school, but seems over the top.

Sorry, OP, but this is simply an exaggeration. My son applied to colleges last year, and neither him, nor his friends, nor ANYBODY in my large circle of acquaintances, all in MD, ever mentioned UVA as an option. Plenty of kids went to public and private colleges and universities out of state. A minority of kids we know went to UMD - bearing in mind most kids we know applied and were accepted, but ultimately went elsewhere. My son was accepted into the W&M/St Andrews dual degree programme, and UMD Honors, but turned those down to go to a private university. UVA was never part of the list.

UMD's general acceptance rate is slightly higher than UVA's, but the idea that UVA has somehow became a beacon for Marylanders is untrue.

I get it is a good school and price of tuition can’t be beat if you are instate.

But I don’t get the obsession from the MD crowd.

Is it just since they are influenced by the VA parents?

It's an amazing PUBLIC IVY! That is WAY WAY underrated.

See? Here is an example of a troll (pretending to be a "UVA booster") just stirring the pot.

yep +1 this is the person who drops the "Public Ivy" statement in every post. I guarantee you that is not someone who likes UVA, but someone who is stirring the pot. Its amazing how much free time some folks on this board have.

It's something of a draw for OOS students interested in politics (access to DC, honor system, Sabato).

It's in the top 25 and some applicants just shotgun every school on that list without knowing much about some of them.

There are UVa alumni living all over the country and they encourage their kids to go there.

There's a very, very deep history of prep school kids from New York and New Jersey attending.

There's a similarly long precedent for wealthy Bethesda kids from W schools crossing the Potomac (and the Rivanna) to attend.

Although many in-state applicants are rejected from UVa but accepted by Michigan, Berkeley, and UCLA, it may be more likely that OOS students only get in to UVa from that group.

UMD seems to be a much better choice for engineering or CS, but UVA has some strong areas too.

UVA really far far down on list of OOS public schools here these days. So much so I just inquired with friends about it and nobody had any interest.

Really? Lots of UVA grads in NYC working in diverse fields from Sotheby’s to State Street. You don’t indicate that you have a student looking at colleges right now— do you? I’m asking because your writing is juvenile with a misspelling or two. “Bolder,” lmao

You seem to be answering another question, maybe "was UVA popular with nyc kids 50 years ago" or "do UVA grads ever leave the state after graduation". I'm only asking because you are harping on things not on table, which is juvenile.

You seem to be an unserious individual. I’m not harping, harpy.

That’s hardly a blip compared to a school like Michigan.

Did you think that Michigan and UVA are the same size?
