That seems to be the trend, apply at a ton of schools and pick from the ones where they are accepted.
In the case above, is UVA a reach or a solid chance?
My oldest is in 9th grade, though I have some experience in a past life working as a college admissions counselor. My general assessment having lived in this area for 10 years is that UVA is a reach for EVERYONE. That said I understand your school should have some kind of scattergram for you to use to assess.

As a math major ?
As any major, your kid needs at least 3 schools in each category. And you must be honest with the definitions of Reach, solid chance/target and safety.
Do that, show demonstrated interest at each school, put 100% effort into all the supplemental essays (Why school X?), and your kid will likely get into 5-6 schools (all the target and safeties) and possibly 1 or more reach.

Our kids didn’t like UVA so applied out of state but it worked with our finances. I would also look for a rolling admission safety. Those VA schools are not safeties.

Target is UVA, fall back WM, safety VT. I
I've heard that UVA is hyper competitive so I figured that was a reach. But as the submission dates get closer I'm wondering if we could reach higher.
So you got a 690 in verbal? Probably need to go test optional to all 3 and apply to others.
