I'm a man and this just seems completely weird to me. I have some remnants of past relationships buried deep within my psyche (I dream about a couple of them occasionally) can't comprehend even thinking about an ex while my own wife gives birth.

A lot of times people are able to settle, to content themselves with a mediocre life, to kind of forget their emotions, distract themselves from what theyre feeling. Than some major, sentimental life event happens and WHAM theyre hit with a blast of what could have been, should have been. The guy who tolerates his middling office job has a near fatal car accident and decides he has to leave and pursue his true passion of carpentry. Or decides to call the brother he hasn't talked to in years. Or... yes, realizes the woman he married isn't the woman he ever really loved.

These massive events have a way of putting things into perspective. Sometimes in ways that can seem shocking to the rest of us

Regarding the topic of this thread, a reason why a person might say this is because they are really uncomfortable feeling “Big Feelings.” So rather than be all in and feel love and attachment for the wife and baby he actually has, his mind goes to some fantasy wife and fantasy baby that he does not have.

Other examples are the guy who wants to spend time together, then is texting others or is on his phone most of the time. Or “forgets” or is emotionally detached during your birthday or other holiday. Then when you distance yourself due to his behavior he comes running back. Dollars to donuts he’d go running back to his real wife if fantasy wife ever made the moves to have a real actual baby, complete with real world responsibilities, with him.

Your child has just been born and you're texting someone else, "I wish you had borne my seed instead of this sad wench"? No way, don't buy it. That's just not a plausible scenario.

Telling someone they're the one they got away is fishing to see if they're up for an affair.
