I don’t think Hopkins recruits for water polo. They do recruit for swimming and those kids tend to play on the water polo team for fun.

I would put Stanford and Princeton on this. They have great endowments and will likely get your cost below umd, if your finances assessment is accurate. They, Harvard seem to be the most generous. Hopkins would also outrank and should have top tier need aid, but I don't know how generous.

You might nix the UCs as oos tuition isn't cheap, and I don’t think there is much merit for oos. I think they'd end up at 2x+ cost of umd.

I only listed schools that have water polo and 4 year engineering programs, so saying it was water polo wouldn't have narrowed the list.

Does GW have a good Eng program? I'd rather pick Purdue or even Rutgers over GW or UC Merced.

He's young. Coach says that if he wants to keep the possibility of getting that admissions boost to play in college, he needs to be inviting coaches to see him now, and sending highlight reels now. Does that mean he'll be recruited or meets academic standards, or want the same thing as a high school senior? I don't know, but he does want to keep those doors open right now. So, that's all I'm asking about.

At this point, his stats look like a kid who would be in the lottery for those kinds of schools. But like I said he's young, things can change.

UMD engineering is pretty dang hard. He wants something more challenging than that while playing sports? What are his stats?

I think Brown should be considered. Their engineering program is highly ranked.

Consider adding Bucknell to the list. I don’t think their engineering is quite as strong as UMD, but they water polo. Navy Academy would also be great if he’s interested in service academic

Our income is low enough that the full need schools likely won't be that different in cost than UMD, the full need-no loan school might be lower. He'll have some grandparent help, so a school that meets our EFC would be fine.

That's a significant portion of the list, and some of the schools that aren't full-need like Santa Clara do offer good merit aid. I do think the UC's are likely to be out of reach.
