I prayed for DS to get hit by the ball.
He struck out. The game went to 10 innnings.
If you're gonna pray, why not pray for a hit?
Simple strategy. Because with the bases loaded and two outs, a HBP has the batter take first, thereby automatically bringing home the runner on 3rd and winning the game.
If PP’s son had gotten a hit, there was a chance it would be caught or he’d be thrown out at 1st. Either forces you into extra innings when everyone just wants to go home.
A hit, by definition, results in a batter reaching at least first.
You might be thinking of “contact.” But PP didn’t say “make contact.” PP said wish for a “hit” which by definition is a more dramatic way to walk-off an opponent than a HBP.

Because a hit is obviously more risky with 2 outs and bases loaded.

No its not. A hit means he reached base safely. Which, if the bases are loaded, means its a walk-off win.
"hitting the ball with the bat" is not a hit. That's just a ball in play. A hit is when the batter reaches base safely without any errors by the defense.
Whatever. Hit by a ball is a guaranteed base and with bases loaded there's a run scored. So, lean in!
If the umpire catches you leaning in with no good faith attempt to get out of the way if the ball, he will call the batter out.
This isn't the major leagues. And I'm not the one playing, am I? Again, sometimes you don't mind if the kid ends up taking one for the team.
NP here. I’ve seen kids called out for this in travel ball.
