My son's HS coach absolutely selected a few of his players based on non-skill reasons--team chemistry, a kid who is a very hard worker, a kid with a lot of potential, etc.
Send your girl to tryouts for the Stars and see how that goes for them

Our place's second level team was really easy to make last year and my dc enjoyed it. Went to tryouts tonight and there were easily three times as many kids as last year. Its the same coach so hopefully he feels some loyalty to his previous players but it was just not what we expected.
hopefully the coach gives every player new and old a fair chance to make a team
"loyalty" to former players ??
Yes, of course. Coaches prefer players they know, have coached, like, and are familiar with. Are you new to human nature?
To make a team and take a spot from a previous player, a new kid has to be one of the best 5.
favoritism is common in human nature, not new to me
new player who ranks 6/10 has to be top 5 in order to make team over previous players ranked 7 8 9 10?
thats not a team or coach I'd want to play for or with if I had choices
good players have choices
Coaches aren't going to mess with team chemistry for an unknown kid who the expect to only get limited minutes. If you have a 9th or 10th player who doesn't complain about minutes, practices hard, and is popular with teammates, you aren't cutting them for another kid who may be better, but would still be the 9th or 10th player
new 9/10 doesn't beat out old 9/10 understood
most of you have a rude awakening in high school or aau if you ever get there and certainly not beyond
I was responding to PP saying that a good coach takes the 10 best. That's almost never the case and there are often good reasons. My kid starts for an EYBL team and has been everything from their team's star to not getting any minutes through out their time playing. I think it's healthy for kids to experience the spectrum
