Portugal was relatively cheap - location and food/grocery-wise.

Croatia is not that cheap. Food is pretty expensive (and not that good). But you can cut down on costs by supplementing with grocery shopping. Farmers markets were not a cheap alternative though.

Copenhagen was crazy expensive - lodging and food.

I'll share what I priced out for my family of 4 (2 adults, 2 elem. kids)...all my estimates are costs without gas/activities/souvenirs

1) Fly in/out Prague and some combo of Prague, vienna, budapest, Ljubljana+region, zagreb. $4,800

2) Fly in/out Venice with only 2 nights Venice and the rest likely around the Dolomites $5,500

3) Fly in/out Porto and stay in Aveiro+Cascais $5,700

4)Fly in/out Paris and visit some combo of Alsace+black forest or switzerland (lots of youth hostels that are actually super reasonably priced as low as 107-167 per night depending on which one with breakfast) 6k

I also saw "affordable" priced tickets to Dublin, Berlin, Stockholm, Hamburg (all at or under $700 pp with very scattered dates. My family trips I priced out are all for July so maybe you could do it a little cheaper in June?

We did a lot in 16 days late June to early July. Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, Gibraltar, Sevilla, Toledo and a few day trips here and there. It was hot but it wasn’t too bad. But I wouldn’t want to be in southern Spain in August. All hotels had A/C and a few had pools. We stayed in Nerja for a few days which is an awesome family friendly beach town that didn’t feel crowded. Our hotel had a rooftop pool with a view of the Mediterranean. The touristy places were crowded but that was what we had expected since summer was the only time we could travel due to the school schedule. We made sure to buy tickets ahead of time for the popular spots.

If I did Spain in the summer, I’d stay on the Atlantic coast in Asturias or Galicia. Not sure how cheap that is.

Londoner here. You do not want to visit the beaches of Spain in the summer. They are full of the worst behaved louts from the UK you will ever encounter outside of a football (soccer) stadium.


That's true if you go to the bigger resort towns. We had a great time at a smaller beach town about 90 minutes north of Barcelona, along the Costa Brava. It was warm but not super hot (because of the ocean breezes), and yes the apartment we rented had A/C, and it was necessary.

Londoner here. You do not want to visit the beaches of Spain in the summer. They are full of the worst behaved louts from the UK you will ever encounter outside of a football (soccer) stadium.
