I'm 48 with a one year old Lab. She will definitely be my last puppy. I'd consider an older Lab after her but we will see.

My neighbors who have retired are the best dog owners. The dogs get lots of attention and love.

I’m the owner of a giant breed from earlier in the thread. Would you get a giant as an older solo gal?

Our dog will last until youngest kid is in college, and then we're probably done. Kids are still begging for a new puppy but won't lift a finger to do anything for the dog we already have (and got as a puppy) so we're done.

I would 100% agree to act as back up owner for an elderly loved one's pet unless it was a really ridiculous scenario like 87 year old MeeMaw buying a juvenile macaw or something.

My grandma is 99, lives alone, and just lost her dog of 20 years. Small breed dogs can be very good for the elderly and she was able to take very good care of the dog. The rescue we worked with had a special category of small breed, calm, dogs that they allowed for elderly adopters. My grandma obviously would not be approved for a new dog, but the shelter did just let her adopt a cat when she presented a plan for what happens to the cat when she passes.
