I'm glad you bumped this. MS and HS don't have lockers in this house, and if one were even available, the kids don't have time to get from place to place with electives, lunch, band, etc., nevermind bathroom and locker.

Spine problems here we come. Their backpacks are so full and heavy.
Can we get an update on softball girl whacking everyone on the stairs?

It’s causing a lot of trouble in our household. The binder is always falling apart and too big.

Students are offered lockers. Not taking one is a student problem, not MCPS’.


I agree with this. Last year, my son carried around a massive backpack, along with a lunch and a water bottle. He refused to get a locker because it wasn’t cool. Apparently, there’s some kids out there who make fun of kids who use lockers. or, at least there is a myth of kids who make fun of kids who use lockers. Which means that no kids use lockers!

Julius West enforced no backpacks in classrooms last year. Not sure why other schools can not. It's also a safety issue


Julius West is a middle school, my MS doesn’t allow backpack in classrooms neither.


Normal in middle school. High school it switches


What is the justification for that?


High schools don’t have enough of them. The high schools are significantly bigger with more kids meaning less time to make it to your locker and to class on time depending on where the classes are located.

Yes, but freshman usually don't get lockers

Again, freshman are offered lockers. Not taking one is a student problem. At high schools where there are a limited amount of lockers, they are offered to underclassmen first. Then if seniors want a locker they request one and are assigned from ones not taken by underclassmen.


My freshman was not. They would have to apply for one and couldn't figure out how.

MS don't let you carry a backpack but HS do, so I don't think it has anything to do with safety.
