As a former teacher, I'd never take away recess. For any reason. Plenty of other suitable punishments that are more appropriate. Kids need recess. In fact, I think they need more recess than they get at most schools (the school I worked at they only got 15 minutes of recess for the entire day). I think they should get a full hour for recess, 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon.

If I was paying between $30,000-$50,000 a year I'd be highly annoyed and tell them to go you know what.
The rule was followed but a human error was made. If there is zero flexibility and understanding I would absolutely pull my kid out. Ridiculous.
Then pull your DC, if you can't follow instructions.
I'm not OP, but you seem oddly pleased that a child was punished inappropriately.

Kid didn't double-check the forms to see that they're signed before turning in. Even my kids are able to do that.
Now OP's DC knows to do it too. Unless OP emails the principal and snowplows this problem away.
You expect a 3rd grader to 'check the forms' to see if parent missed one signature out of 20? My 3rd grader is in a private school also and we got a giant packet of stuff to fill out, but my school does not do inappropriate punishments like taking away a child's recess for that, and would simply send it home for parent to sign.

The kid turned in papers that weren't entirely filled out.
How do teachers communicate with parents? Through the children. OP got the message. She didn't like it but she got the message.
Highly inappropriate of this teacher to take recess away for any reason. You know what else the teacher could have done if she wasn't on a power trip. Send the papers back and say "please sign page 8."
Taking recess away is almost never appropriate unless the student is a danger to himself or others.

The teacher overreacted but is almost certainly reacting to whatever happened in the classroom last year- it’s a guess but I bet the parents were bad about signing things, helping with projects, signing up for conferences, etc.
I'm not entitled. I'd left my reading glasses at work, and I was having a ridiculously hard time reading the small print. I take full responsibility for forgetting the glasses and missing the signature. It's all my fault, not my kid's. But it didn't happen because I'm entitled.
I’m not saying you’re entitled- just that this is an approach sometimes used by teachers to deal with checked out parents! You might be dealing with the consequences of others’ past entitlement, that’s all.
