Honestly if you just need a spot you could try Bullis or WES.

Not uncommon if kids can get into their HS of choice earlier without having to compete with their entire class

at this point easiest could be Lowell given that the rising 7th class seems to be ablaze with bullying issues...heard they lost families last year because of it

It is, but the reality of admissions is that yield doesn't always work out as planned, and some people do pull out over the summer leaving gaps the schools want to fill. They usually will not, however, go back to the pile they rejected to fill those spots. They hope for a few summer transfers and late applicants who are a better fit than the denied pile, and often they will get that. Some schools even leave a few empty seats because they know they will get a few applicants who moved over the summer, usually from abroad.
+1. Nearly every school, even highly selective ones, has a Round 2/late applicant process in some form for all the above reasons.
I think the point PPs were trying to make is that you can't predict, based on historic selectivity, who has space in the summer and in what grade. It can be random, so casting a wide net is a good idea.
