But you aren’t. Throwing insults at other posters doesn’t make you that. Op seems out of touch with the current admissions world which is particularly difficult for engineering majors . I say this as a parent of ‘23 senior from a rigorous private who is happy where she landed, but plenty of her classmates overshot. Denying the current reality isn’t helping op or her son.

For what it’s worth, I also think op’s son has very good odds at NCState and UNC. If he’s happy there, no need for too many apps. Lehigh is likely a target, maybe Va Tech which is slightly easier for out of state applicants. Of all the reaches, Duke seems the best shot as it seems to like local kids. The Ivies and Cal Tech seem a complete waste of time for a kid not at the tip top of the class academically, even at a rigorous private. Probably the best course of action for op and her son to sit down with their school counselor and find a few more realistic schools that reflect the changed admissions environment of the past two years and the difficulty of admissions for engineering majors.

NP, Congratulations. Your son has quite the resume. Particularly impressive extra curriculars. I obviously don't know what your son is looking for in a school and what you can or willing to pay. Although UNC is a great school, I would guess it's engineering program is considerably weaker than the other schools of interest. Unless you want to pay 90,000/yr for a handful of privates most of the strongest programs are large state schools, many of which offer merit. Have fun! Good luck.
