My dh decided his life wasn’t fun enough and he wanted to fall in love again. We separated and he started dating. He prioritized fun and stopped being around for our kids. I was doing 100% of the parenting. My 13 year old asked me how I was able to handle all the unpleasant parenting stuff, like making sure homework and chores got done, enforcing bedtimes, disciplining them, while also being the fun parent. The obvious answer was because I was the only parent, but still, I felt seen.

Don’t worry, most of us recognized it for what it was; he appreciated your treating him like an actual person. Acts of kindness are appreciated the most by people who are rarely on the receiving end of them.

I got a text from another mom telling me that my son (8YO) is a kind, generous, caring friend and that he sticks up for people and works hard to include everyone. I cried and then read it to my son and took a screenshot and sent it to my mom.

Someone told me I am the funniest person they know who doesn't make fun of people or cut people down to be funny.

When I was lamenting to a friend about feeling guilty about not volunteering for something she said "Don't. You are the one in our friend group who takes care of everyone else and keeps us connected."

I have a best friend who is very career driven, focused and successful in the corporate world. She is always demeaned by people in our patriarchal community/friends circle as someone who doesn’t understand worklofe balance and should spend more time taking care of her husband and child.

My husband (unprompted or influenced by me) gave a 10 min monologue to her on how her passion for her work is admirable and that she should always be proud of what she’s accomplished and that working hard is not a bad thing.

Her jaw dropped because she had never been appreciated for her drive and always put down for not focusing on her family. And cherry on top was that he did it in front of her mother in law, sister in law, husband and child.

I have never been more proud of my husband. He got laid that night.

Back when I was single my friends told me that they loved coming to my house because they felt so safe and cozy. All they wanted to do is curl up on the couch under a blanket and forget about everything else.

A guy I dated for a little bit, less than 3 months, circled back. I thought he was just looking to hook up and I told him that I'm not dating right now. He said that it wasn't a problem and that he had taken inventory of his life and that I was one of the people that brought him joy and that he'd still like to see me. It was nice to hear.

As an adult, that I'm "smart". My entire academic life was spent in lower level classes, I was an extremely average student. I always felt dumb, stupid, and incapable so imagine how great it felt to be told the opposite.

I’ve frequently been insecure about my laugh. I’m not an especially loud person, but my laugh is kind of loud.

Years ago, I was watching a friend’s child. She was about 5, and told me that she really liked my laugh. And I instantly felt better about it, because kids are so pure. So, yeah, my best compliment received was from a child.

Idk if it’s the best, but the one that stuck with me was from a drummer who told me I had good rhythm.
I much prefer receiving compliments on things other than looks. As do I prefer giving compliments on things other than looks!
