What are the best programs? What are the next level down from best? We have some ideas for other parents and coaches of course but would to get other feedback.

Ok.

Quick rundown.

Elite - Eybl and SSB. You better be 6’5 in 8th grade or an amazing athlete. Just the damn best. Takover, Durant, Melo, Warriors, New World.

Some of these teams carry a B team, but they are not on a shoe circuit. Best recruiting here.

Next level Down is UAA teams and Rise.

You get DC premier, VA elite, Thrill. Great players, many get recruited for college.

Next level is Independent teams. Not really on a shoe circuit but some claim to be on Hoop Group or Zero Gravity but those are not top tier.

Here you get some good teams like Stars, Family over Fame, Cavs, St James, Nova 94

These will have mix of good players and some ok. There will be 40 kids tryouts out for like 12 spots. Most have B teams as well that may not play on these circuits.

Then there are tons of other teams like BRYC, Shots Up, Ctab that are more rec type teams but play in some tournaments as well.

For elite teams. These teams ar rush ally well formed and are invite only. You will be asked to try out if you are good. They rarely take kids from open tryouts. The other teams will hold tryouts and take the best kids.

Still many more kids trying out than spots.

For 8th grade there will be seasons in Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer

HS teams only Spring /Summer.

When we were at the last Made tourney, 1/2 the kids in the 8th grade Eybl teams were dunking. Also most of the top teams are heavy reclass so basically you have kids staying back a year to play with younger kids.

Very helpful post. Ty.

So for 2027,

Your HS should be doing some sort of Fall team. The issue with AAU is that the season for 3rd to 8th grade go All year. There is a Fall season, winter, spring/summer. Basically you can play AAU all year long.

For the HS grades, now including 2027 this year, most of the good teams DO NOT play a fall or winter season as it conflicts with HS ball. So if you look at teams in Eybl, SSB, UAA, non will run fall teams at the HS level. Just spring/summer.

Some local teams might run some tourneys or leagues like Nova 94/ Stars/ Cavs. But they won’t be playing in AAU for the fall.

Looking at the St James Fall league, there are a couple of local 15U teams. You might want to try Nova 94. The complete list of teams is on Tourney Machine. MD Flames fall league in Boyds is another place to check, but I don't know what app they are using

There are tons of threads here on all types of AAU teams.

Just search.

If you have 8th grader, did he/she play any type of travel/county ball outside of house league? How tall and how “good” are they.

There are so many teams around here. Some elite where your kid needs to be 6’5 to make and lots of decent teams. Even the “bad” teams you still have to try out to make as these kids are still pretty good.

Give me some info and where you live and I’ll give you a rundown of the teams from the Eybl types to the local ones.

For boys, the ones I know of are Durant and Take over nike. Elevate and Stars have deals on the girls side, but I don't think they have them for boys

It's weird that there is literally no basketball forum out there. Even here, there's soccer, lacrosse and swimming!! But no basketball.

+1000

It is easy to find the sock clubs and the lacrosse programs. I don’t think it is as easy to find basketball programs..
