We do have the technology to wipe out mosquitoes. During the Zika scare scientists created male mosquitoes that were sterile, and when released in large numbers, severely curtailed and potentially eliminated the local population. But the biggest hurtle is overcoming public distrust and resistance.

Truly, that's gotta be better than mass spraying and killing bees and harming humans.

Grew up in humid Deep South and mosquitos were terrible. As were fire ants, yellow jackets, chiggers etc. Lived in dc for 2 years and it was much better than the south. I think the spraying makes a big difference - I left alabama/Georgia before west Nile was a thing and my areas never sprayed. Southeast Asia was the absolute worst I’ve ever experienced. I still have scars on my legs. Wait until the Asian tiger mosquitos take over here.

Now I’m in park city, ut and there are very few mosquitos. There are mosquitos if you go on hikes up to the lakes, but in park city itself, very few. We’ve been eating outside almost every day this summer and no one had gotten a bite. We accidentally left a door to the patio open a few nights ago and woke up to a chilly house, but no mosquitos. No bugs at all actually. I know they spray and they anticipated more mosquitos due the wet winter/spring. Ticks and wasps are less of an issue here. I don’t check my kids for ticks after they play outside. But as pp said, mosquitos and ticks are spreading.

We have zero mosquitos in our yard in bethesda. You must have a wet place where they are breeding. We do have tons of those tiny little things that fly into your eyes and then some kid or bitey bug that lives in the grass and bites your ankles when you spend any time in sandals in the grass. But no mosquitos. If anyone knows how to get rid of the clouds of eyeball-seeking bugs, please share.

I grew up in Santa Barbara and there really aren’t mosquitoes there. I think most of Southern California and Arizona (dry, arid climates) are pretty mosquito free.

Montana

Canadians get second homes in Montana to get away from the mosquitoes in Canada.

I have a crazy answer -- Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. My parents live on the lake there and I've never been bitten by a mosquito. They used to spray there many years ago (in big trucks that would drive around spewing toxic fumes), but don't now. I guess the mosquitos haven't come back yet.

Maybe not where you want to live, but it can be a fun vacation spot.

You’ve obviously never lived in florida or the Deep South then. Much worse than DC.

I was born and raised in the DC area, lived there most of my adult life as well, but have now also lived in two different areas of Florida, east coast for six years and SW Gulf coast for three years.

There are mosquitos in Florida but they are much worse in the DC area than anything I have experienced in Florida.

This. Florida has tons of lizards and frogs to keep insects in check.

I lived in Louisiana and the mosquitoes are way worse in DC. Although I assume I lost several years of my life based on the number of times they sprayed from crop duster planes and it sprinkled on me.

Yep. I grew up in FL and DC is soo much worse. I remember having to go inside when the mosquito truck came by.

The Southwest. But we have scorpions. It’s a trade off.
