I wouldn’t put a kid who goofs off in an accelerated class like this. It’s not fair to them or the other kids.

They have raised the cutoff scores in recent years in an effort to have fewer kids on the advanced track, for whatever reason. We had to push back to get our kid into the advanced class. He just finished geometry, and had no trouble earning all As all 3 years of MS math. Math ended up his favorite subject, too.

Recent education theories argue that pushing kids into an advance track too early causes them to grow too dislike math. Not saying it's right or wrong but there is an anti acceleration movement out there.

I think the three years in one with sixth grade pre-algebra is pretty extreme. It should only be reserved for the truly gifted. Unfortunately, every parent in Arlington needs that to be their kid.

According to the chart in the letter, 1046 on MI is the highest you can get on Math Inventory but it's the requirement to be placed in pre-algebra? This seems like a way to get rid of the advanced track in Math.

U need both advance SOL and 1046 for MI to be qualified as that the cut off. Kids that got in pre-algebra with lower scores might have gotten in because of teacher input or low# of kids who qualified for that MS and they pull the next tier to fill the class.

Kiddo got over 550 on SOL in 5th and 1000 in MI. Places in Math 6 for 6th grade. Teacher moved my kid to Pre-Algebra after a few weeks of school. Did fine. Some Bs and As on tests and quizzes and finished with an A.

Took 8th grade SOL with passing score mid 400s and 1040 on MI - got placed in Algebra 1 Intensified.

Sounded like most of the friends from Pre-Algebra also got Algebra 1 from next year and every kid in her class tested MI over 1000 at the end of the year (which she said it was a requirement that u need to get at least 1000 MI).
