The point of a vacation is to have fun, and not being able to have ice cream, seafood, grilled meats, etc. is no fun.
Sorbet is awesome, you can grill tons of veggies as well as some fruits, and you can grill tofu. Surely you can't be so stupid as to think vegan people don't have fun on vacations.
Apologies, I should have ended my post with "to me." Doing without those food is no fun TO ME. Therefore I would never "just eat vegan for a week." Also tofu is just wretched.
I'm not the PP, but if I said "vacation isn't fun to me without alcohol" most people would stay that is disordered. If you cannot enjoy a vacation without ice cream, seafood, and grilled meat, that sounds like a you issue that you should maybe work on, rather than a pronouncement about what is and is not fun for other people.
I'm not a fan of tofu myself, but it's absolutely ridiculous to suggest that there are no fun foods that don't involve animal products. Are you honestly sitting here saying that you do not enjoy ANY food that doesn't contain animal products? None? Zero?
NP - I enjoy plenty of foods that don't involve animal products. However, I am a very good cook, I (and my family) love to eat, and having meals we really enjoy is an integral part of vacation. When we go somewhere with a vibrant food culture, literally the first thing I do is figure out where and what we eat. When we go to a beach or ski house, I make means that we all like.
So no, I'm not eating salads and tofu for my whole vacation. Could I? Sure. Will I? Absolutely not. I deserve to enjoy my vacation too.
I agree with the PP, this is the dumbest post on this thread (and possibly imaginable).
Is the issue here that you think that the only way to eat vegan is to have nothing but salad and tofu? If that is the case, it does not actually sound like you are a very good cook. But sure, you deserve to enjoy your vacation. Eat whatever you want. You shouldn't have to defend it to anyone.
Neither should the vegan family. That was my point. Either way, OP should really just talk to these people. If you're good enough friends to go on vacation together, it seems kind of weird that you have not had to negotiate meals before. Definitely time to correct that.
Oh, sorry - forgot the beans. (Which are much better, by the way, if you throw in some pork.)
The point, obviously, is that neither I nor my family will enjoy our vacation if we are required to eat vegan. I don't care if I'm eating at 11 Madison Park for every meal.
Anonymous wrote:“Going vegan” doesn’t require anyone to eat a single thing they don’t find appealing or morally acceptable. I would expect that the vegan family has a plan for making meals work already and it won’t require changes to OPs diet but you people who cannot imagine meals without meat or dairy must be the most boring cooks in the world.

I'm guessing that kids are involved. The vegan family may not want their kids around kids who are eating cheese/pepperoni pizza, chicken nuggets and ice cream etc. because their kids will probably be interested in those delicious kid foods. It could be tough: you have a right to feed your kids the foods they eat as does the vegan family. How to handle? You just have to talk about it out loud.
I have a close friend who is strictly kosher but also very easy going. We spent loads of summer days together and my kids generally ate vegetarian (that's what they did out of their house) in their presence although my friend always said "order whatever they want" we respected each other's preferences and needs, and we talked about it too. I explained it to my kids, they understood that they could have pepperoni pizza another time but we would eat things that their friends could eat too when visiting together. It always worked out.

I don't think you were invited on OP's vacation so chill
Oh sorry, didn't realize that only people invited on OP's vacation can opine. It's gonna be a pretty quiet thread.
Feel free to "opine" but she's asking how to make this work, not if you would choose this particular vacation and why or why not.
And what useful advice have you offered to OP?
