Yeah, it was really odd the xray showed only the 1 inch piece if he ate a whole mini cob.

if he threw it up I would be tempted to think its working itself out. pup has been eating/pooping fine?

can't believe the ER vet missed this. So sorry OP, this is the worst.

Well we are back at the emergency vet for more X-rays. This morning at about 8:45 he threw up a huge chunk of cob. I tried calling his regular vet and pressing the button for emergency but it kept looping me back to a VM telling me to leave a message or press 0 for emergency. After several times of that I hung up and called the emergency vet and they said to bring him in for more X-rays.

This chunk he threw up was huge compared to that 1 inch piece from Sunday night. I guess they didn’t see this enormous piece on any of the X-rays from the other night. 😩

I’m so relieved for your pup!!! And that you aren’t facing $8k in debt! Really happy for you about this best possible outcome. Thank God you took him in before his condition deteriorated.

It’s so hard to make these decisions. My dog once ate cooked chicken bones. There’s risk to letting them pass, and because they’re sharp, there’s risk to inducing vomiting. I opted for inducing vomiting to cut out the misery of waiting and because it was daytime and we could see our regular vet. I also knew the medical expenses would mount if his condition deteriorated. I got lucky and vomiting worked without harming my pup.

You should consider pet insurance if you don’t already have it.

Wow!
I was so nervous to go to the end of this thread for fear of what I'd read.
Glad OP had a good outcome.

What a relief! Get some rest and hope the rest of your holiday is uneventful. Teaching the “leave it” command is really important. It seems like every time I walk my dog there’s something dangerous laying around (wtf is it with all the chicken bones, anyway)?! Since one of the first commands puppies master is “sit,” it’s a pretty easy transition to teaching them to wait for their food, which helps reinforce that they don’t eat anything without your permission. Put them in the “sit,” hold your hand up saying “wait” while you get their food bowl. As you start to lower the bowl, if they break the sit, put the bowl back on the counter, put them back in the sit and repeat as necessary. Once they can hold the sit with the bowl on the floor, make them wait until you say “eat.” You should also occasionally touch them and their bowl while they’re eating to desensitize them from food aggression.

Wonderful outcome! Yay!! Hope you're getting some well-deserved sleep now (and hope your pup is resting comfortably).

I’m so glad I asked her to try inducing vomiting one more time!

Thanks so much everyone. I’m home and exhausted but still feel wired up!

And yes to teaching “leave it!”

I’m so happy you didn’t need surgery! Once you guys have had a chance to rest, start working on the “leave it” command so you (hopefully) don’t ever have to go through this again. There’s lots of good advice out there—here’s a link to get you started:

Oh my gosh, I’m so happy for you! Yay, go home and get some sleep. I had my dog over 14 years and had no idea corn cobs could be so dangerous. (Because I don’t like corn). Good for you, knowing this and following up and getting your dog the necessary care. You’re a very good dog mom.

I have no idea what to do, it sounds like I don’t have any good options. . God I hope it comes up with vomiting this time. I feel myself about to cry and I’m trying not to. I haven’t even had this guy a month and I can’t believe this is happening. Not to mention 8k would devastate me. I feel sick to my stomach.

Please please let it come up this time.

Awww, OP, keeping fingers and paws crossed for you!
