Yes, my kid took online health in like 2018. There were two required in-person sessions at that time-- one was the final exam. I'm sure covid accelerated things, but they had virtual options independent of covid.

OP - online summer school isn't virtual academy with live instruction every day. The course are provided using Edmentum software (I think). There is instruction - in the online course. It is designed to be asynchronous. There will be readings and videos embedded and then concept practice (similar to Khan Academy). Of course, kids will skimp on actually doing the readings and videos to learn the material and just do the practice assignments, googling for answers.

The opportunity for live instruction happened during the school year. Summer school courses are designed for kids that failed a course to be able to earn credit by demonstrating some engagement and minimal understanding of the material. If you and/or your student really are invested in learning ... then don't squander the opportunity during the school year.

How do you know all of this? My kid is retaking a class because teacher gave tough tests with material not covered in class with insufficient time. Received 88 and 89 both quarters.

And you think summer school is going to have sufficient time? The curriculum essentially needs to condense one week of class into a day. You are essentially banking on the summer class being easier.

Central summer school has live sessions 3x per week. Some teachers do a better job presenting material during those live sessions than others. In addition to live sessions, central summer school offers in-person drop in hours 2x per week at central locations in the County for live in-person consultation with a teacher. In addition, there are several assignments, modules, tests done online.

NP here. I didn't realize that central summer school was done by a third-party platform and did not have live teaching sessions. Is that true of all the classes, even ones that kids take for original credit like health?

Your kid failed a class and you don’t know why? Do they not understand? Did they not turn in work? Did they not do the work?

There are different options throughout the county. My child is taking honors geometry as an original class in person at his home school. He really likes the teacher and is not complaining about the crazy hours- yet- which is good because he really struggled with Zoom and would not have been able to be successful with a virtual class. They are taking quizzes daily and working on daily packets (that seem to equate to about a week of regular math class). They have not logged into Chromebooks yet, though they are expected to bring them. The teacher is one of the strongest at the school and I see the same dedication here at summer school. I think it is great if kids who failed are offered an in-person option, but I would hope that it would be similar to the model I am describing and not what the OP described. Also, they are only allowed 1 ansence through the session to earn the credit.

The obvious thing for OP to do is to supervise him on a geometry test at home, like a algebra 2 summer math packets or some homeschool placement test or Khan academy, and tell him if he passes her standard then he's done with summer school geometry. That rules out cheating.

I think reviewing math in the summer to fill in gaps is great, but bumping one letter grade in geometry isn't where it's at. Focus more on preparing for algebra 2, precalc, and AP calc.

DP. I personally wouldn’t let or make my child retake a class if there original grade was a B. But,To play devils advocate here, colleges are very competitive these days and every B hurts a child’s chances to get into the IVY’s. Maybe this B really effects the child’s chances?

Not if it is just one or two Bs on the transcript. My DC in a magnet program had 3 Bs on their transcript. Still got accepted to 3 ivies in 2020. They had such high overall academic strengths and high level of extracurricular involvement that a few Bs along the way didn't matter.

Another way to think about it is that if all you have going for you is your GPA, you aren't getting into Ivies anyway.

I would love for you to talk to my magnet kid. She has only one B, and has a very high level of extracurricular involvement but is convinced she won't get into anyplace other than UMdCP based on what she saw happen in the last couple of years to her friends applying. Everyone she knows who got into Ivies either was a recruited athlete, a legacy, or was on the School Board.

Where are you posting from? No one here calls it UMdCP! And only one student at a time sits on the school board and we all call him or her the SMOB.

Anyway, your alleged MCPS kid would be lucky to get into UMD. Many magnet students with one B do not. UMD would rather get an out of state kid.

Posting from MoCo where I’ve lived for 12 years! I know it’s called the SMOB but didn’t think most people would know that acronym. (The SMOBs from the last couple years had multiple Ivy admits so it does inflate the Ivy admits a little,). I do think people. All it UMDCP now to distinguish it from UMDGC — there’s more than one UMD that is a viable option now for kids. I have a general pet peeve on DcUm when people accuse you of not being local because you use slightly different terminology than they use themselves. It’s like you cant conceive that there might be someone slightly different from you that uses different words or has a different experience.

Its a narrow perspective and one you shouldn't have to defend yourself from.

DP. Your kid isn’t totally wrong. This past couple of years the ivy college admission rates for non hooked students is abysmal. Throw in students that are minorities and first generation college students and chances are slim!

Mathematically, this is what happens, when there is a large number of applicants for a small number of spots.
