Because these parents might actually have awful boys themselves, but not really know it. I say leave it alone, and just try to focus on having a good relationship with your son. His friends are definitely not something you can control.

I'm suggesting you not get involved. I think it's odd sometimes about how much we as parents try to help our kids navigate friendships, and in the end I feel like our kids need to figure this out themselves. I mean, I don't remember my parents talking to me about my friendships past like elementary school. And besides, maybe he pulled away because his friends were jerks and maybe were experimenting with drugs and alcohol and he didn't want to be a part of it? Give him the benefit of the doubt, even if it means he's not as social as he used to be. He's gotta figure this out without his mom.
