PP you quoted -- Only been once, but we rented a house that was right on the beach for next to nothing. The ocean is wild -- furious some days and absolutely breathtaking on nice days. I know it is very foggy/marine hazy much of the time, but when the sun comes out, and you're the only one on the beach, it's amazing.

We were stunned it hasn't been built up.

Ithaca, that's an interesting call. I love Ithaca and it's beautiful in the summers. But spending winter there is a hard pass for me. It looks like you appreciate wintery spots, though, so it might be right for you!

Cold weather helps keep the riff raff out and allows you to have more clothes and styles for layering

NYC - UWS/UES if I can afford it

Hawaii - great weather, significantly less prone to gun violence, and the lowest depression rates in the US

Key West - only place in FL I'd live right now, which is sad because I grew up in FL and always thought I'd move back, but not now

PP's suggestion of the Virgin Islands sounds interesting too, but I've never been so can't comment on that

It's the only beach area in California where I can still afford to live within 6 blocks from the beach. Grew up there and I consider it to be beautiful. Way less pretense than any of the other beach enclaves in Southern California. Way less traffic, sprawl, and crowds than the west side of LA. Plus, its one of the only beaches in urban California where you are allowed to launch a kiteboard from shore. Also one of a very few full-time legal dog beaches in the state. The city also owns the port and the oil islands off the shore, thereby giving LB immense spending power.

But please, stay away from LB and tell everyone it is horrible.

You are so lucky to love humidity. I hate it, it wears me down. There are so many places that I don’t go to because of humidity.

curious--safer from what? For me, I think there are parts of FL that would have less gun violence than where I live in DC, but the violence they have seems less targeted so I'm not sure I'd be less concerned. Not to mention more driving so more risk from that, and the natural hazards (hurricanes, flooding, lightning, alligators).

I agree that I would do furnished rentals or housesitting or something rather than settling down long term if you don't know what you want.

For the summer: western Massachusetts or Vermont, or northern Michigan (like Traverse City area). Missoula, Montana is lovely if there aren't wildfires. Denver is also pretty nice now, and they've had so much rain that the fire danger is lower.

After hurricane season, Miami would be fun. I'd also like to spend some time in New York City--fall and spring seem best there. I also really like San Antonio and Tucson.

For the winter, maybe Hawaii? Or Puerto Rico if you don't want so much of a time change?
