All of this is dependent on your situation. OP I assume you are just going to one of these places to randomly rent a house or stay in a hotel??
Your experience is going to be shaped by where you stay, how close to town you are, what you are going to be doing, etc. Why don't you ask a specific question?
We have a house in Chillmark, Martha's Vineyard. It is absolute heaven because it has everything we need and we can walk to a private beach. We get invited to dinner parties all summer and trek out to James Taylor's restaurant, places in Edgartown sometimes, etc. You can't convince me it would be better for me anywhere else based on my situation but you can convince me it has things to offer.

It depends on where you are. The Vineyard is very diverse. Some parts are really nice (Edgartown, Chillmark). Some parts are dumpy (Oak bluffs)

What’s dumpy about OB?

There is nothing dumpy about Oak Bluffs. Please.

How do Chatham and Edgartown differ?

Edgartown is on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard. Need a boat or plan to get there.

I’ve seen mentions of Chatham and Edgartown being reminiscent of Georgetown. How are each similar or different?

We flew directly from DC to Nantucket. Took like an hour and 15 minutes. Picked up our car and - woof.

But OMG the "traffic" on Nantucket with all of the big rental SUVs? The congestion and nastiness at the two supermarkets? The general unplesantness of the place. The entitlement and arrogance? We had a regular deal at a house but found the general traffic/parking/nastiness on the island to be just too much. I'll never go back. There are so many many other nicer places to go to (and cheaper - everything on Nantucket is hiked up on the excuse that it had to be flown or shipped in. Well, yes, so does Amazon with my cat food and that's not going up.
"

Nope. None of this. We went mostly by foot after we got to our cottage, we bought food at one supermarket where they were absolutely charming, though very expensive and we ate out at some lovely places. I think the weekends saw more "traffic" with day trippers but that didn't affect us.

+1

No car at Nantucket or the Vineyard.

I would not visit Martha’s Vineyard without a car.

Nothing compares to The Vineyard IMO.

This is the same guy as the Northeastern and "shark" threads, I suppose. And he isn't blocked yet??

Np, not previous shark guy, but I was going to say: Chatham is beautiful but you basically cannot go swimming on that part of the cape because of the great whites. Virtually nobody goes deeper than 3 feet.
