Lexus and Porsche. Own a 911 and LX. Nothing out of ordinary maintenance this far.

I own a 15 yo Mercedes with 210k miles on it. I never had an issue with it. I followed the manufacturer maintenance schedule by the book. The car never broke down. It is very reliable and still running great. But the regular maintenance is expensive for these cars when you want to do it right. A simple oil change costs $300. This is the difference with Lexus and Toyota where you pay $60.

I test drove both an Audi and Lexus this weekend and honestly- they are basically the same price and I liked the Audi better. Are they really that different in service costs?

I had an A4 years ago and it was a great car.

Lexus is the "best" luxury brand from the perspective of value and reliability. They are also very comfortable, quiet, and well appointed. I view Lexus as an understated luxury vehicle for the practical person who wants to upgrade from their Subaru and will pay cash.

But they do not ooze sexiness or wealth or style.

So it all depends on what you want out of a luxury vehicle.

Personally, I'd rather keep a modest Subaru for daily driving and then buy a Corvette or Porsche convertible for weekend fun and adrenaline. I don't see the point in having a luxury vehicle as a daily driver.

Lexus is the least luxurious of the luxury brands. But yes they are reliable. Depends on what's important to you.

Service costs are where they make their money. Calculate the car’s lifecycle cost. Not the cost upfront.

I think Mercedes is consistently at the top of luxury cars but repair costs are crazy.

I love my GLS. Drives like a small SUV but built like a tank.

Oh that’s right, only our European overlords are capable of making luxury items.


It’s so ethnocentric it’s absurd. Genesis is making amazing vehicles that blow euro cars out of the water, for example. France, Italy, and Germany don’t have some kinda monopoly on luxury. Hell, 99% of luxury is stupid perception anyway and often has little to do with quality. A simple Toyota will beat most luxury cars in terms of actual day to day performance per dollar and after factoring in maintenance/repairs.


But people are allowed to spend their money on stupid.
