Don’t all kids “deserve” high quality care? Whether they’re born to a single mother on welfare or to a two physician family? I guess I don’t understand where you’re going with this…

This. And think long term. Whatever you offer her this year, she’ll expect the same (if not higher) raise next year.

If OP were posting about how she really wants to go into her boss’s office and ask for a raise and better benefits but is worried she doesn’t deserve a raise or is asking too much or is scared that her boss will be annoyed, everyone here would say “Go for it, girl! You are totally worth it!”

Hmmm.

Out of all the responses you could choose, why annoyed? It's a business relationship. Nothing personal about it. It sounds like she has a stronger money mindset and is more willing to advocate for herself than you might be. Rather than be annoyed, follow her lead.

I've been a nanny for 16 years and I've always gotten a $1-2hr raise from families per year. I was at my jobs for 3 years, 1 year, 4 years, and currently 8 years.

Her justification was, inflation and the fact she had been with us for one year. I would never ask my boss for more pay with that justification. Not even when I worked an hourly rate in retail would that request have gotten me more money. Is this just the way it is in the nanny world? Raises expected annually for no reason other than retention?

Retention is a big reason to give her what she wants! BTW, if you can afford a nanny with one child, you can afford a $2.00 raise.

Offer her $1, split the difference.

Even $27/hourly is low in Bethesda. Call a nanny agency and they’d tell you nannies are making more than $27 plus full reimbursement of healthcare. The fact that you’re annoyed by her asking you for a $2 raise is outrageous!! How much does she take home after taxes?!!

Anonymous wrote:Yes most nannies expect a $1-2/hr raise per year. Very standard and most candidates would bring up the same with you.

This was standard in Bethesda as far back as 20 years ago! We really could not afford it and should have switched to day care far earlier.

This is OP. I’m confused as to why you think I don’t or can’t take care of myself…??

Anonymous wrote:Are you for real, OP? Do you work in the real world yourself? Yes, annual raises are the norm, not the exception - except when the employer is a poor one.

Luckily your nanny will have no problem finding another job when you fail to meet her reasonable remuneration requirements.

Maybe but the nanny also has to think about the lost income while looking for a new job. Is that worth the $40/week less taxes she is arguing for?

It’s not the norm and op may not be able to pay more.

My spouse never gets a raise and his income goes up and down every year in the corporate world.

Up AND down? Is he on commission?

Nope. Some of it is RSU's but some of it is salary and the salary changes year to year too.

Well that’s weird and he should look for another job if they’re regularly cutting his salary.

Sure, because jobs are so easy to come by. It is what it is.
