I wouldn’t defend the public easement from your toddler. I don’t plant anything there because it’s not my property.

How does your male dog know the sign asks them not to pee. The sign could say it was chemically treated. Can your dog read? Do female dogs piss on the lawn because they can’t read?

My dog cannot read. I don’t allow him to pee on a lawn but will let him on that strip of the other side of the sidewalk that doesn’t belong to the owner. If there is a sign there, he is drawn to it. Some females mark as well. Not sure if they can read, my experience is limited to males.

My female cannot read but can pee on command. She only poops in our own yard when no one is looking.

Are you serious? This is the mentality of people who own an animal and walk their animal pick up its poop and let it pee wherever the thing wants. Do you let your animal lick your face after it licks its ass?

It’s called the tree lawn. And I think they are within their rights to not have to look at urine stains in the grass in front of their home. As you say, they maintain it. This is part of the maintenance.

This board had some hate for me when one of my neighbors did this and scolded me for my dog using public space e.g. maintained by the HOA and outside if her fence.

Yep. It's called the public right of way. Owned by the same entity that owns the road. People perceive it as belonging to them, but they don't. It's a very hard concept for some to grasp.

Dogs have destroyed part of my yard. I like my neighbors so I don’t say much. But yes, dogs can be trained not to pee certain places. Owners are just lazy and think everyone adores their canine.

Do you live in the city? Preferably somewhere like Dupont or Adams Morgan? Logan? There is literally nowhere for them to pee outside of these little dirt patches. It's actually the polite place to let them go instead of someone's yard or a space that has been manicured with flowers or grass. Big area of mulch outside of an apartment building? That's fair game. It's not laziness or entitlement. Where would you suggest they go? People don't have yards.

In DC row houses you "own" to your front door but need to maintain the front walk and tree boxes. You can literally come home and the city will have dug up your entire front yard -- brick and all between sidewalk and house. This is true in many jurisdictions. Homeowners do not own that strip between sidewalk and the road. And also the first few feet of your actual yard is not yours either. Any resident that has had new sidewalks put in knows this. We live in CCDC.
