Anonymous wrote:My family is full of subtly racist WASPs, nothing overt but they make little comments and their tone/body language is such that you can pick up on the fact they don't want you dating or marrying people of another race, that they look down on other races, etc. Feels awkward being around them and I've dated a number of women of other races. Anyone else experience something like this?

I mean, it ended up being hilarious it was so wrong.
My cousins and I are very lefty and open-minded. The ones stuck in the middle are my mother and her siblings. They have made great progress. I suspect that some of them simply have made progress in overt to covert racism. But others really have grown to respect most skin colors and ethnic provenance.
Now on to sexual identity. Here everyone is Catholic or if not that, very socially conservative, so my family is still at square 0: fear and detestation.

Laughable! WASP culture is absolutely racist.
No. True WASP culture is the type of Episcopalianism where you are very worried about racism and social justice but have no minority friends. It's about being overly obsequious to your housekeeper because she's "like family". It's about believing you couldn't possibly be racist because racism is a character flaw and WASPs don't have character flaws, they are the moral paradigms that all other Americans should strive to be.
LOL, this describes many Episcopalians I know.
Oh boy is this spot on!
Christians in general are racists.

Another thing I find absolutely mind boggling is the Chevy Chase Catholics who love to try to imitate WASP culture. Like Catholics were as bad as minorities and immigrants to old WASP families. They weren’t allowed in country clubs or in the social register! It’s bizarre.

Only whites can be racist.
By definition, BIPOC peoples are incapable of racism.
Who gets to make that definition?
those who are marginalized. This is absolutely correct. Only whites can be racist.
I am a liberal, but this is one of those areas, like gender, where the new lefty shibboleths are so ridiculous that they are literally unbelievable. It is self-evident that non-whites can be racist. The evidence is there for all to see. Stop this nonsense, you are embarrassing yourself.
+1. Racism is the belief that individuals are determined by their skin color. It is also the belief that some people with common physical characteristics are genetically superior.
"Ism" = not just an individual belief, but a belief that has been entrenched for generations that and is foundational to a system that grants privilege to certain groups without those groups even having to opt in.
It's the systemic part. You can't decide race doesn't matter to you and start living in a world where you're unaffected (for good or ill) by racism. You can decide you're not into astrology and astrology won't affect you at all after that.

If you have a problem with this, you should discover why. As for the other posts pointing out issues with other communities, start your own thread. This thread deals with WASPs.
For those who don’t think WASPs are racist, please explain to me why country clubs blocked memberships of minorities or different religions. Maybe the new breed of Episcopalians are more enlightened but the older generation were low key racists.
This point about older generations is largely correct. But not even universally. Our fancy local country club blocked Jews like our family doctor, so my parents joined the YMCA outdoor pool instead. They were Episcopalian, as were a number of the other Y members.

Wow . Way to paint with a broad brush . Out of curiosity, when did these 'subtly racist opinions of some poc work ethic' start surfacing? I ask because when some of these poc were providing free labor in parts of thus country , no one ever called their work ethic into question.

I've been married to my wife for 25 years and no matter how many times I've told her that the correct term is either people of color or black, she still calls them "colored people" and says that back then, they wanted to be called colored instead of other things. Um, yeah, I guess if the options were colored or n-word, I'd pick colored, too, Jacqueline!

Who got to decide on the new definition was it amended in the last 5-10 years?
People who understand power dynamics.
