I didn't even so much as catch a cold when they were conceived. My husband (luckily) doesn't pick his nose and eat his boogers the way a 2 year old does. Nor does he touch the bottom of his shoes and put his fingers in his mouth like a 4 year old does. Have you even watched normal childhood development? I don't wonder why the kids get sick when they go to school for the first time. Hygiene is learned over years. If your kids are normal, they have gross unhygienic habits. ... then you put your face on that. Yuck.

Yes, I absolutely don't share drinks! That too is unhygienic. What are my kids getting into? Um, everything. They catch all the normal bugs your snot nose kids give them at school.

I’ve never kissed my kids on the lips. Why would you need to do that? It also spreads around sickness faster. Just no.

When they were tiny I saw that drooly snot face and just thought "yuck". These were my own beloved children. Head or cheek is fine, lips ewwww, no way!

I think it gets weird when the kids start thinking it’s weird - 10ish. Before then, I’d the kids appreciate it, then it is sweet.

OP: I guess DH and I are a representative sample of the DCUM population! I get both perspectives but can’t relate to being grossed out by kissing your own kids. And neither DH nor I are trying to pressure each other to adopt our own behavior…but we definitely think the others behavior is weird. Neither one of us is going to change…at least not until the kids age out.

Oh and I still side cheek kiss my dad (standard greeting for our family) but no Joe Biden style greeting for grown adults!

I’ve kissed my kids on the lips, but at their initiation. So like a baby/toddler/young preschooler. They seem to naturally drop it on their own with age. Now my oldest is 8 and he still asks me for a hug or cuddle at times, but hasn’t kissed me in years. So I think this is something that just fades away over time. My youngest is now a toddler and I’m definitely going to soak up the sweet kisses during the short phase.

We kissed lips until they were about 5, then just cheeks. Their faces are just too cute, and they wanted to. I think it's because they see mom and dad doing it that way.
