My (now former) SIL used to do something similar with my nephew but she shaved his head. Not in a cute summer buzzcut way, but in a "he looks ill, is he ok" way. He was basically bald. It was awful. I don't know if it was some sort of power play or what, but his school photos all through elementary school make him look sickly.
I mean, it isn't DH's fault the barber didn't cut it well. And at 7, DS should be able to choose his own haircut without it causing a fight between his parents. Like, I get OP doesn't like the haircut but it is completely absurd to turn it into this big deal. Let your kid get what he wants. If they truly butchered it, go get it cleaned up. Arguing with your husband about this is way worse than a bad haircut.
