Even those of us in school health clinics were issued test strip kits to instantly determine if a drug contains fentanyl.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — Two 16-year-olds have been arrested and charged with robbing a person at a McDonald's in Silver Spring on Friday.

Detectives with the Montgomery County Department of Police determined that a juvenile victim was at the fast food restaurant on Georgie Avenue, when he was approached by two teens, a boy and a girl, who demanded his shoes. When the victim refused, he was punched in the face and his shoes were taken.

The two 16-year-olds left in a Honda SUV, police said. Soon after, officers saw them leaving John F. Kennedy High School, a three-minute drive away from the McDonald's, in Wheaton-Glenmont, and get in the same SUV connected to the robbery. Officers then conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, which they say had stolen items from the robbery.

A privately manufactured gun, also known as a ghost gun, and a large quantity of fentanyl pills were found. The two teens were then taken into custody.

Police said the 16-year-old girl was taken to the police station, where she was released to her mother. The 16-year-old boy was taken to the Central Processing Unit, where he was charged as an adult.

What’s the message here? Girl kid goes home with mom and boy kid charged as an adult?

I’ve seen this type message play out from Kindergarten to College. Girl cries and doesn’t get in trouble. Boy gets sent to principal or gets detention or gets suspended.

This is a crime. She goes home with mom, he goes to jail and charged as an adult? Wtf

I don't know, maybe the boy did the punching and the ghost gun and fentanyl belonged to him and the girl was unaware of the gun and drugs in the car? Of course, I'm just speculating without all the facts - just like you are. Maybe you should wait for more details to come out before making assumptions that the DA's office is sexist.

They both participated in the robbery. Maybe she wasn’t the gun or car owner, but she certainly was participating in the theft. That cannot be overlooked.

No one is overlooking anything. The point is that custody decisions are made by someone with more information than some rando on DCUM. Maybe the boy didn't have a parent or guardian show up to whom he could be released; did that occur to you?

It doesn't appear that the girl was charged, which is an issue because she committed a crime.

Law enforcement has an obligation to public safety. They don't get the benefit of the doubt; they need to earn it.

The accomplice could be destroying evidence and intimidating witnesses right now.

Do you have actual experience with the criminal justice system or do you just watch a lot of Law and Order?

I overheard one student say, "It's whack you bring drugs to school and get like no punishment but can get expelled for a fight." This is the perception the kids have...little to no consequence for drugs. I was surprised they think a fight can lead to expulsion because I have yet to see that ever happen.

Incredible. As a teacher, are you not able to talk to admin and shouldn't admin be able to alert the Community Engagement Officer who can then keep an eye on the kid you're concerned about?

The police have told me they don't care if it's weed. I don't know if it's weed! I don't care! Do something!!! I see money and something being exchanged. Def huge bags of weed I have seen. But other drugs are very small and we can't see that unless we are up close. I don't understand this. I'm really nervous for my kid to start high school to be honest. Please keep an eye on your kids - talk to them. Because those in charge won't help you.

Same at our middle school! The kids are dealing drugs at school and outside of school. My kid has witnessed it in the bathroom. It’s crazy that our schools have become a ‘safe’ place for the kids to distribute drugs to other students.

Don’t blame the principal. He’s right. There really is nothing he can do! It’s a complicated and dysfunctional system all around.

Why doesn't MCPD crack down on this? I mean it's not like everyone isn't aware it's going on so I have to assume they don't care?

MCPD is not just randomly allowed to enter school buildings to do drug checks. Can you imagine how that would go over with voters in Montgomery County and with our political leaders who want to defund the police?

To say nothing of the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

The Supreme Court allows drug searches in public schools.

The Supreme Court allows police officers to just randomly enter school buildings to do drug checks? The Fourth Amendment doesn't apply to students in schools, at all? Students shed their entire constitutional right to freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures by the government at the schoolhouse gate? How about that.

Lots of schools have metal detectors and search backpacks of all students entering the school, in the name of safety. It's legal.

What's next, you're going to complain that your Constitutional rights are being violated when TSA searches you carry-on?

And they want to limit traffic stops! I hope they remember this case (and probably many others).
