This is ONLY for Life Science and Government not Algebra 1. You must pass algebra 1 MCAP with 750 or higher. If not able to pass you must complete a Bridge Project with 50 hour work. You do this by a trained MCPS staff.

I think when the PP posted that link last year, it did say it would factor into your course grade. I think they must have quietly walked that back and updated the info at that link. Because I remember seeing that and now can’t find that info anywhere. The school has no answers either.

Oh ok. My Algebra 1 teacher today said you must pass the Algebra 1 MCAP a score of 725 or higher. I am really confused by this. In the school year of 2022-2023 you must pass the Algebra 1 MCAP with 750 or higher. This is really confusing.

Not about math but another thing that is unclear about high school graduation requirements is what happens if you take the AP versions of Bio or history and then you don't get a passing grade on the AP.

This chart from a different county is more clear

You can read the history of the MCAP requirements and the changes made in recent years, as well as the current state regulation and concerns/questions raised by various Maryland school districts to the changes in this document from July 2023.

Passing the Algebra I MCAP is not currently required for graduation. Passing the Algebra I class and taking the MCAP is required. MCAP does not factor into the course grade.

Requirements for MCAP have been in flux for several years. Prior to covid, the state was putting in the requirement to pass the Algebra I MCAP, but then that was waived in 2020 and changed to only require taking the MCAP, not passing it. Moving forward, it seems like they may eventually have the MCAP for Algebra I and English 10 count as part of the course grade, as is being done with government and biology this year, but they haven't yet announced a start date for that.

You can find the graduation requirements for your kid's class here (at least, once they have started high school): https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/graduation-requirements

Source? The MSDE info from last year posted above showed you did not have to pass.

Also looking for the source. The only info I see is this for the class of 2028 and it says just take the test.

9:44 again, forgot to mention that one potentially negative aspect, is that the school may keep having your child take the test until they meet one of the requirements. This includes in high school too.

If passing the Algebra MCAP ever becomes a requirement, there are often other pathways to fulfill the requirement. ie for other tests there were the following possibilities:

-meeting a combined score option. Where if the student failed the Algebra test but met a certain combined score with the Algebra and English 10 test then they can be considered meeting the MCAP requirement

-for the HSAs they used to have a Bridge plan which students can do to meet the requirement if they failed. I THINK there is still something like that now but it's not the same as before. But it's still called the Bridge Plan

-they can take substitute tests to meet the requirement. I think the Algebra 2 MCAP or AP exams

and if worse comes to worse, school systems can require a waiver for a student.

I think it's very rare for students not graduate due to state assessment requirements.

But they very least need to have taken the test to qualify for some of the other methods. And I'm not sure what will change. For example as the other poster mentioned Life Sciences now counts towards the final grade and am not sure if they'll eventually look to do that with the other tests.

You only need to take the Algebra test. You do not need to pass.

MCPS has DE, but I don't know if the one-semester hack works.
