Because of the covid-era delays, CBP actually extended that grace period to 2 years.

"If you submit a renewal application before your membership expires, you will be able to continue to use benefits up to 24 months after your membership expiration date."
But once your renewal is approved, the new expiration date is still 5 years from your old one.
