Eh, I’m not so sure. I’ve come to think the room sharing thing isn’t good. I can see a suite set up with a common area but I think everyone should have their own sleeping space and a bit of privacy.

Smith had some freshman singles decades ago. it was part of the appeal for me, although I ended up with a roommate one year.

I have asthma and incense and candles are a problem. I would ask about this at each college. Also ask about smoking. See how prevalent it is. Candles etc and smoking are typically banned but some schools enforce these rules more than. Others

Most college kids have a single room sophomore through senior year if they live in an off-campus house.

+1. I hated college my freshman year. I liked my roommate and we didn’t have any issues but being with another person in a tiny room with nowhere to go for quiet and privacy ever is hell for some people. Looking back, I would have been happier at a community college. I ended up transferring and getting an apartment with friends from high school at a different college.

OP I get it because in the UK everyone gets a single room all through college. I cannot imagine living any other way. But these days there are noise cancelling ear phones, wax ear plugs, silk eye masks and tents. You can get quiet and privacy without a single room, if you must.

Was just about to post this! My info is dated but when I went to Pitt back in the late 90s, I was able to get a single in Tower C all four years. I’m assuming freshmen can still live in Tower C?

Colgate has singles and suites with single bedrooms

Cornell has a relatively large number of singles.

I got a single but shared a bathroom with others at MIT. I regret it, I should have had roommates. I later did when I lived in Boston and it was awesome.

OP my DS went to Swarthmore very similar school in some ways. Pretty much any legitimate sounding medical excuse will get a single particularly if it’s really needed. Just check out the room. The first one offered had its own nickname it was so bad. DS declined and they found another one. It can be done.

Bryn Mawr has a handful for first years, more for the upper years.

Washington and Lee has mostly singles.
