OP, you might want to do the math on this one. Living there can certainly be cheaper, obviously. But if you want to live in an SFH in Chestnut Hill & send your kid to Penn Charter or Germantown Academy, and also save up for private college, that’s going to add up quick.

Avoid 69th Street Transportation Center in Upper Darby like the plague. If you do move there the only acceptance forms of public transit are SEPTA regional rail, NJ Transit & buses. Avoid the high-speed rail (whatever they call the subways) & the trolleys as much as humanly possible.

Agree. But DCUM thinks that every state is Virginia, in that regard.

That's a little bit of an exaggeration. Bethesda is between 70 and 75 percent white. Vermont is 94 percent white. Maine is 94 percent white.

BCC where my kid goes to school is 53 percent white.

My perception is that the mainline has a fraction of the “prestige” it once had. It just seems a bit more run down nowadays.

A lot more UMC people send their kids to philly public schools now in Society Hill, Rittenhouse Square, Queen Village, the neighborhoods slightly west of UPenn (Garden Court & Spruce Hill) etc so those areas have good k-8 schools. I don’t think the main line has a monopoly on where wealthy Philadelphians live anymore.

South of Lancaster Ave is in outright bad condition lately.

The state schools you would want your child to attend if you lived in PA (Pitt, Penn State or Temple) are “state-related.” They receive some state funding, but very little. All the other state schools in PA, what most people would think of as public universities, are in the PASSHE system. They are mostly former teachers colleges. I think only one offers engineering. Most are in very rural areas & have tiny enrollments. Those schools are priced in-line with schools like UMD & VT instate, but with none of the reputation.

West Chester Univ. is $10k/year tuition, but I don’t think it attracts DCUM types. Temple is about $17k/year tuition. Pitt & Penn State are very expensive, I’ll agree with that.
