It really surprised me when brickskeller closed — they were really unique and it was always crowded. And it’s not like fancy beer has gone out of favor — I think it’s more popular now than it was 30 years ago.


A friend worked there. It was due to ownership/management not really knowing how to run such a business. The demand was there, but they failed when it came to execution.


It was a total mess 20 years ago, they NEVER had anything in stock. I would always give the server my top 3 beers, and 9 times out of 10, she would STILL have to come back to get another order because they were all out of stock.


Me, too! I would even write them down. The server would bring like a third of the table's order and disappear until we needed the check, which was often earlier than initially planned due to not, you know, getting any beers. If I wanted to socialize without drinking in a mildewy place, I could have gone to several friends' apartments on Capitol Hill.

One of my fave Dupont places in the 90s was Bua Thai between 16th and 17th on P. Nice upstairs deck. They are still there---have amazing noodle dish with shrimp that no other place has. There was a great Malaysian place on 18th called Straits of Malaya---also with a great roof deck. And the original Lauriol Plaza in the small location at 18th & S. And remember Tom Tom on 18th? Il Radicchio on 17th was great. Galileo and Obelisk on P Street---both excellent.

I once got served a cooked burger that somehow had a patty that was wrapped in Saran Wrap at the Brickskeller. Pretty sure it closed soon after. But it was such a cool idea for its time, even if the beer menu was in large part fiction.

The Italian restaurant you describe was likely Enzo’s. It was an incredible place with authentic food. I think they were located where Al tiramisu is now…Mr. Enzo welcomed guests….
