It was their palpable loneliness that made them sympathetic despite their despicable actions. The flashbacks gave context for the terrible choices, giving some context. With less skilled actors, would have been hard to pull this off. Especially Ali Wong, since the rich entitled person who has it all is incredibly hard to sympathize with normally, especially with that awful mean streak.
