It was their palpable loneliness that made them sympathetic despite their despicable actions. The flashbacks gave context for the terrible choices, giving some context. With less skilled actors, would have been hard to pull this off. Especially Ali Wong, since the rich entitled person who has it all is incredibly hard to sympathize with normally, especially with that awful mean streak.




I've always enjoyed Ali Wong but her character is the reason I had trouble getting into the series. Such a callous self-centered jerk, and you don't realize how broken and lonely she is until the layers began peeling back over the course of the series. She did a great job with that.

I binged it over several nights and found it fascinating. Loved the insight into the cultures and different family dynamics and so forth, and how far they were willing to go to one-up each other.

Totally a side observation, but it was puzzling as to what Amy's 'deal' was. Her plant shop and non-horticultural knowledge (which she admits) to the big box store chain? $5 million?

Didn’t you? I agree with that poster because I was surprisingly empathetic even after we discovered what he did with the applications. He was a flawed real person who made bad choices often. Maybe it's one of those "more empathy for the beautiful" type of things though? This show leaned on fully thought out characters. Most shows/ movies present flatter good vs. evil or maybe just a few good traits in the bad guy. Yuen could have been someone you know like a hard luck cousin.

I had a hard time getting into it. I really wanted to like it because I like Ali Wong, but I just wasn't feeling it.
