Immigrants who don’t learn to speak, write and read English have very limited chance of upward mobility in the U.S. They mostly end up limited to low paying, hard labor jobs such as lawn, nannying, cleaning, etc. And their children are impacted as well.
No one is saying an immigrant have to only speak English and forego their native language and customs- they can still speak their own language at home, teach it to their children, and such.
But English should be required.
+1. I’m a child of immigrants (and lifelong Democratic voter), and I see no problem with this bill. Many countries, including Western democracies, require a language test as part of the naturalization process. Immigrants shouldn’t have to sacrifice their own language and culture, but requiring English proficiency is good for everyone.
Which other Western countries are famous melting pots? I wish that immigrants who came here could have English proficiency, more for their own success here than for “efficiency,” but the fact is that lots of those other Western democracies that require language tests also provide language classes. Norway does, for example.
Canada, Australia, the UK. Australia has 1/3rd of its population foreign born.

Is JD planning to start a citizenship path for people without access to the education & job opportunities that currently necessary to get a skilled visa?

They will if they have children
