Strong students always have lots of choices. To know if this is any different from prior years, you would need data from so many kids, maybe hundreds if not greater.

OP in your case I don’t think either school is generally “better”. These schools are so close in prestige and education value and cost …that the kid should totally just decide on other reasons. 1/3 of the classes will be specific to the major, and most of the curriculum will overlap between schools (even if one is more quant or theoretical than the other).

A lot more of the 4 years will be spent taking non-related classes and other requirements, making life-long friends with other students, hanging around campus, dating, sleeping in the dorms, attending functions, pick up sports. studying in the library, etc.

Recruitment is similar too. Not many companies that hire a kid with a degree from one would not hire that same kid from the other.

I def understand. But Sometimes we parents overthink this.

Congrats to your son, OP! Two great options so the best one is where he feels he will be better motivated and able to thrive academically and socially. We are making a choice between two schools that are close in prestige and costs and kid wants to major in two areas where one seems to have an edge over others so we are talking to students and seeking opinions.

He will be successful at either school if he makes the most of it. Duke will be a great experience, and it offers a good mix of academics and experiences. They just unveiled the banners for the new residential college type system called QuadEx. You have the Lemur Center which is a one of a kind center. You can climb up to the top of the chapel on certain days every month. They’re in the middle of a campaign to increase funding for STEM fields and more. Looking at the history of a school, it didn’t really have much money or influence until the donation from James B Duke in 1924, so it is a relative newcomer to the limelight.

All in all, they are both great schools, and let you child make the decision.

Penn econ. Better recruitment opportunities. The school really doesn't have a public policy program unlike Duke. Duke for policy.
