I never did. 15% to 20% is for table service by someone earning $2.35 an hour. Except for boxing and bagging your meal and handing it to you there’s no service with takeaway.

No, waiters also make at least minimum wage. Their hourly may be very low in anticipation of making up the difference through tips, but if the tips don’t get them to min wage, the employer pays the difference. No one in the restaurant is receiving a paycheck that amounts to less than minimum wage for hours worked.

It is a check out counter. How much do you tip the check out person at the grocery store, clothing store, department store? If they are earning sub minimum wage, that is awful and they should quit.

I don’t know but sometimes I think it’s funny how I agonize over what often amounts to a difference of a dollar or two. The difference between going and not going is what is really going to matter in my budget, not whether or not I tip one or three dollars.

Mentally when I go to a sit down restaurant I already calculate that it will be 20% more for tips. I’m in the restaurant for about an hour and the waiter is providing a real service. Whereas, there’s no expectation for service at the takeout place. I pay online, or the cashier. It’s self service, so I plan to pay the price on the menu plus tax but not % on top for tips. Of course I do tip our regular takeout Chinese restaurant and local coffee barista. During the pandemic we’ve given $20-$50 tips each time we picked up our order. But typically we don’t tip at random takeouts places.

$1 sounds very low and I am generally a very big tipper, but I will say I was slightly unnerved today at a downtown sandwich place that had options starting at "ok" (15%), "good" (18%), "great" (20%) and "excellent" (25%). Maybe I need to grow some balls, but I felt like a POS even hitting good, but I don't expect to tip 25% on takeout...

For the record, I do about 10% and thought that generous.

If your kid saves my kid's life, I'll definitely tip him or her! Otherwise, I don't see an actual reason to.

Yes, but we have no way of knowing what they’re paid. Nor if they’re sharing to-go tips with other staff. Restaurants and cafes should be more transparent.

I asked the young gal at our cafe if she shared the tips and she said no. They’re all hers.

To go order tips should be like 10%
