Vanderbilt's overall acceptance rate is 5.6% this year. But it's worth remembering they have 2 rounds of ED where they fill most of their class. Still incredibly difficult to get into but I imagine their applicant pool is also a bit weaker than the top ivies, Stanford, Duke, MIT. Their pool is probably more similar to Cornell, JHU, and Rice. Not a bad thing but worth remembering acceptance rate doesn't mean everything, quality of applicants also matters.
They are also one of the only if not the only school that formally admits their recruited athletes during RD. I’m sure they give them letters before, but they are admitted through RD and counted in those stats. Further skews the numbers — if you want Vanderbilt, you apply ED.

Oh, ok. This isn't 1987. Vanderbilt is a tough school to get into. It ranks higher than Columbia, Cornell, Berkeley, Georgetown. But sure, Northeastern. Totally the same.

My friend’s DD. Super wealthy, white. Attends one of the top privates on the country. Got in ED. I don’t know her stats but she has one very big EC that she is serious about and Vandy made sense for it.

My kid was accepted ED. MCPS. No hooks, very high stats (perfect SAT), lots of rigor. Not amazing ECs, but interesting and well rounded; not particularly pointy. Honestly, lots of other similarly impressive kids who did not get in. We feel lucky and my sense is that it’s all a crap shoot. But I would say definitely apply ED1 if it’s your first choice.

Most t30 schools fill their class ED. Why would you expect your kid to get in RD?
Where are you getting the idea my student applied RD? My student applied ED1 and was rejected. Not a single acceptance among 8 privates in our city ED (not DC) which is not typical. I think Vandy wasn’t looking to the private schools as much this year for admissions.
