Our shadow days happened before the deposit was due. It helped clarify for our younger one (who had two accepts) that they were very excited about the school the older one had an admit at (only one). We were really relieved because we really didn't want to split them between schools.

I don’t disapprove and the fact that you read disapproval into an extremely straightforward question suggests you are maybe a little uptight and/or defensive. I was curious if you’d made a decision yet or if you were still considering. No ulterior motive. Good luck with your decision, it can be tough to make a call between good choices.

We got our 2 DC into one school which was fantastic. One of them got into another equally good school. The older one was waitlisted there.

We took the decision to put down a deposit with them both together, declined the other’s admission and waitlist, and withdrew them both from the waitlist at the one school where both were waitlisted.

It felt only appropriate to be definitive for the institutions and other families who are sorting out their entry lists.

I agree, super unethical and wrong. But just hadn’t even occurred to me it was possible or contemplated by folks.

It’s not a thing and I don’t know anyone who has ever done this. In my opinion this is really unethical.

However you justify it to yourself, you’re holding a space at a school that should go to another student. Your kid can only go to one school and you’ve had a long time to do your research—ridiculous that you don’t just make a decision and instead selfishly hold two spaces.

I guess this is a thing? Really hadn’t known this was so common!
